Brilliant Futures Myopia Management Program

A Closer Look at Pediatric Myopia

What is Myopia

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error that occurs when the eye does not properly bend light. The light is unable to focus correctly so images are not clear and distant objects appear blurred.

A Growing Concern

More than 40% of Americans are myopic, and that number is increasing at an alarming rate, especially among school-age children. Two-thirds of Eye Care Practitioners say the presence of myopia among children in their practice has increased over the past 5-10 years, and 81% agree that myopia is one of the biggest problems impacting children’s eyesight today

What’s Causing the Rise in Children?

The upward trend in cases can be attributed to several factors, generally the result of a combination of the following:

  • Genetics, one or both parents are myopic
  • Insufficient time spent outdoors
  • Prolonged time spent reading, playing and working with digital devices like phones and tablets
  • Poor lighting levels

Future Risks

Myopia that is allowed to progress without treatment has been linked to more severe, sight-threatening complications later in life, including:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Myopic Maculopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
